CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has shown no symptoms of a concussion in the aftermath of Thursdays opener against Denver that would prevent him from playing in Sundays home opener against San Francisco. The only thing Ill say is hes sore in terms of playing-the-game sore, coach Ron Rivera said Monday of Newton, who took four helmet-to-helmet hits in the 21-20 loss to the defending Super Bowl champions. Not anything else sore.Hes tough, hes resilient. Hes moving around pretty good today. But at least one of Newtons teammates remains upset that the officials called only one penalty against Denver for helmet-to-helmet hits. That came on Carolinas final drive and was negated by an intentional grounding penalty on the NFL MVP.Hes treated like a running back -- and hes not, Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen?said of Newton. Hes a quarterback that happens to be big. And fast. And strong.Olsen and Rivera agreed that Newton doesnt get the benefit of such calls because at 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds, hes bigger than most quarterbacks and carries the ball a lot in the read-option offense.Newton rushed 11 times against Denver.Thats what drives me nuts, Olsen said. They say, Oh, but he runs the ball so much. Every single one of those times he was playing quarterback. I dont give a s--- if he ran the ball 10 plays in a row as a running back. When he is a passer, he is a passer. Period.Im not saying Cam should get different rules than anybody else. Just call the rules for every single person that is a quarterback. Period.Rivera agreed. The hard part is the hits that a lot of people are concerned [about] was when he was a passer, he said. It came about because he was a passer, and as long as hes behind the line of scrimmage hes afforded quarterback protection.Olsen and Rivera each noted plays in Sundays games in which the defense was flagged for a helmet-to-helmet hit that was far less violent than some of those Newton took.Olsen mentioned specifically a roughing-the-passer penalty called against the Bengals in which the defenders hand brushed the helmet of Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Its almost insulting, Olsen said. Its insulting.Rivera wondered whether the officiating became stricter because of what happened to Newton. There were a couple that I watched that I thought, Hmmm. OK, Rivera said.Rivera sent several of the helmet-to-helmet hits to Newton that werent penalized to the league office. He hasnt gotten a response yet.Rivera doesnt know when the NFL or NFL Players Association will conclude its investigation into whether the team and league responded appropriately under the concussion protocol by not taking Newton out of the game to evaluate him.He hopes a ruling is made by Wednesday so we can start focusing on San Francisco. The Panthers could be subject to fines or even the loss of draft picks if it is determined they didnt respond appropriately.Rivera defended his staff, reminding that Pro Bowl middle linebacker Luke Kuechly was taken from the game late in the first half of last years opener and missed the next three games with a concussion. Our guys are very aware, and they understand the rules, the protocol, Rivera said. Its just unfortunate some people dont understand what the protocol is. Wholesale NHL Jerseys China . ORLANDO, Fla. -- A look at some of the highlights from the five games on the schedule Friday at the Orlando Summer League:THE REPLACEMENTS WINOn paper, the Orlando Magic White was the secondary team for the Magic in this weeks Orlando NBA Summer League. The White unit was the only team out of the 10 that didnt have a legitimate NBA player or first- or second-round draft pick. But it was the White, comprised of D-League and overseas players, that finished the week 5-0 and won the league championship after defeating previously unbeaten Detroit in overtime, 87-84, on Friday at Amway Center. It has a lot to do with their spirit, their fight, said Bill Peterson, who served as the White coach. I told them all week I was really proud of them, guys who werent playing were up off the bench, the bench was engaged. The White showed itself to be scrappy all week, with different players stepping up to make big plays. On Friday, it was well-traveled point guard Justin Dentmon who came up with the play of the game when he knocked down a one-legged, contested 3-pointer with 3.7 seconds left in overtime for the win. His shot provided the only points scored in the overtime period. For the group of castoffs, it was a gratifying feeling to win it all and perhaps get the attention of some NBA scouts. Its a credit to the coach, he brought us together, said Dentmon, who scored 16 points. We had never played with each other in our lives, and for us to come together and bond like that is unbelievable. We started making jokes in the locker room that they call us underdogs, but the better name is `The Replacements. In the movie, `The Replacements came together and they won, just like us.LEARNING CURVELos Angeles Clippers rookie forward Brice Johnson showed some potential this week, but the first-round draft pick clearly needs more time to devellop.ddddddddddddThe 25th overall pick out of North Carolina had three impressive games; Johnson scored 23 points in back-to-back games, and then had 19 points. But he followed that with a six-point effort that came on 1-for-13 shooting during Fridays 106-77 loss to the New York Knicks for last place. The Clippers, despite having a couple of future players on the Orlando Summer League team, finished 0-5 on the week.Johnson averaged 15.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and shot 50 percent from the field for the week.A STEP BACK TO TAKE STEP UPDuring last years Orlando Summer League, Detroit Pistons first-round pick Stanley Johnson showed everyone he can score with the best of them. But there was little else. This week, however, the sophomore was out to prove he could do far more than be a scorer. The lottery pick (eighth overall) from 2015 showed his game is indeed growing.Johnson, a 6-foot-7 small forward, picked up his defense this week and got the ball to the right places consistently. During Fridays losing effort to the Orlando Magic White, he scored 21 points on 8-of-19 shooting while grabbing five rebounds and giving out five assists.PLAYING STRONGAnyone with eyes could see that Orlando Magic second-round pick Stephen Zimmerman will need to spend some time in the weight room this summer if the 6-11 post player has any hope of contributing this upcoming season. Also apparent this week was the toughness of the 19-year-old one-and-done player from UNLV, which he flashed at times for the Orlando Magic Blue. He blocked shots and mixed it up with stronger and bulkier players throughout the week, which gave his new coaches hope for what could come in the future -- and with some time in the weight room.
