SAN DIEGO -- St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jaime Garcia will have surgery on his left shoulder this week and is expected to miss the rest of the season. The Cardinals announced Wednesday that Garcia will have surgery to repair tears in his rotator cuff and labrum. Team doctor George Paletta will perform the operation on Friday in St. Louis. Garcia is 5-2 with a 3.58 ERA in nine starts this year. He was put on the disabled list Sunday after feeling pain that increased over the course of three starts. "This isnt surprising news to us," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "We anticipated that surgery was a real possibility. I think its a relief for him to go in get the shoulder cleaned up and allow him to move forward and be healthy for spring training." Garcia was sidelined with shoulder soreness twice last season. He chose rest over surgery during the off-season, but the latest recurrence of shoulder pain led to a recommendation that he have surgery. WACO, Texas -- The Title IX coordinator at Baylor University has resigned over a disagreement in her role to oversee changes at the school following claims it mishandled sexual assault cases for several years.The university said in a statement late Monday that Patty Crawford was disappointed in her role implementing recommendations by the law firm Pepper Hamilton, which determined earlier this year that the school mishandled rape allegations for years and the football program operated as it if was above the rules. Two former football players were convicted of rape, a third ex-player was indicted in July and other past players have faced accusations.Pepper Hamilton put forth more than 100 recommendations to eliminate what it deemed the schools hostile response to women who said they were assaulted. For instance, one recommendation calls for the training of senior leadership to understand current federal law and guidance to support the Universitys Title IX function and set an informed tone at the top.Crawford, who became the Title IX coordinator for the largest Baptist university in the U.S. in November 2014, could not be reached for comment Tuesday regarding what specifically the disagreement was about. The Pepper Hamilton investigation covered three academic years, including 2014-2015.The University is grateful for Pattys leadership in establishing fair and equitable Title IX processes that are also supportive of the needs of survivors, Baylor said in its statement.
