Its been nearly a month, since the Colorado Rapids have taken the friendly pitch at Dicks Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids return Saturday to take on the San Jose Earthquakes in a battle of the two lowest-scoring teams in the MLS.With seven games remaining, San Jose (7-8-12) sits in eighth place and below the red line with 33 points. The Earthquakes are winless in their last four games, though, and now face a Colorado team coming off an improbable win.The Rapids (12-5-10), despite being shorthanded, went onto FC Dallas home pitch and shut out the first-place squad in the Western Conference standings. It could turn out to be a season-defining win for the Rapids, who spent much of the first half of the season at the top of the Western Conference table, but have been slowly sliding down in August and September. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak and sent the Rapids back home for the first time since Aug. 20.Defense has been Colorados calling card all season, and the midseason acquisition of U.S. mens national team goalie Tim Howard only fortified the Rapids back line.Saturdays tilt will be the first time Howard faces in his U.S. teammate, San Jose forward Chris Wondolowski. Wondolowski leads the Earthquakes with 10 goals. The Rapids are unbeaten at home this season, going 9-0-4.But San Jose has had success on Colorados home pitch in recent seasons. The Earthquakes are 4-1-5 in their last 10 visits to Colorado, with the last three matches ending in draws.Plus, San Jose beat Colorado 1-0 in the season opener for both teams this year, with Wondolowski scoring the only goal of the match. Both teams are desperate to find some offense. The Rapids have scored multiple goals only once in their last nine game. They defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0 win Aug. 6.San Jose also has struggled to produce consistent offense. The Earthquakes have scored multiple goals only once in their last eight games and have been shut out eight times this season.
