BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon?says he is entering rehab, an announcement that comes less than a week before he was set to rejoin the team. After careful thought and deep consideration Ive decided that I need to step away from pursuing my return to the Browns and my football career to enter an in-patient rehabilitation facility, Gordon said in a statement released through the Browns on Thursday. This is the right decision for me and one that I hope will enable me to gain full control of my life and continue on a path to reach my full potential as a person. I appreciate the support of the NFL, NFLPA, the Browns, my teammates, my agent and the community through this extremely challenging process.Gordon was suspended for the entire 2015 season for multiple violations of the NFLs substance abuse policies. He was reinstated conditionally on July 25 by commissioner Roger Goodell, though Gordon also was suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season. He was eligible to return next week, ahead of Clevelands Week 5 matchup against the New England Patriots.Gordon took to Twitter later Thursday, and he again thanked the NFL and the Browns. He did not indicate why hes seeking treatment. The NFL, in a statement, said its concern is with Joshs well-being and declined further comment. The Browns did not directly address Gordons future with the team, although its tough to see him staying in Cleveland given all that has happened off the field.Coach Hue Jackson called it unfortunate.?I think Josh needs to do whats best for Josh, he told the Browns radio network. I think we all support him 100 percent. We want the best for him, but we understand at this time he wont be with us, and we move forward from there. The Browns welcomed Gordon back after the 2015 suspension, but they also drafted four receivers and gave ex-quarterback?Terrelle Pryor a full look at the position.Their approach was to consider Gordon a bonus but to plan for the uncertainty if he did not return. We support Josh in taking this step to seek additional help and treatment, Browns executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown said in the statement. His singular focus must be on his own health. We want nothing more than for Josh to be successful personally and professionally and will not comment on his status with the organization at this time.Gordons off-field issues began in college. The talented yet troubled wideout was dismissed from the team at Baylor and Utah for failing drug tests. The Browns took him in the second round of the 2012 supplemental draft. He was suspended 10 games in 2014 by the NFL for violating the substance abuse policy, and he was suspended for the season finale by the team for missing the final walk-through the day before. He also was suspended two games in 2013 by the NFL for substance abuse policy violations. And earlier this month, an arrest warrant for Gordon was withdrawn after he complied with a year-old court order to take a DNA test in a paternity suit.An attorney who represents the woman told Cleveland.com that the DNA test came back Thursday and showed that Gordon is the father with 99.9 percent certainty. Another court hearing is set for Nov. 8.?Despite an 0-3 start to 2016, there had been optimism for the Browns due in large part to Gordons expected return in Week 5. He led the NFL with 1,646 receiving yards in the 2013 season and looked like he was back in that form during the 2016 preseason, catching two passes for 87 yards and a touchdown in his debut.Multiple teams reportedly inquired with Cleveland about a potential trade for the wideout late this summer, but the Browns rebuffed them, saying they werent interested.?Together with Pryor, Gordon could have given Cleveland two playmakers going forward despite injuries to rookie wideout Corey Coleman and quarterbacks Robert Griffin III and Josh McCown. But those plans now may never come to fruition. After a lengthy wait, persistent rain finally forced the postponement of the Nationals game against the Miami Marlins on Saturday night. CARSON CITY, Nev. -- A plan to put $750 million in public funds toward an NFL stadium in Las Vegas has passed the first of two major votes in the Nevada Legislature, with lawmakers saying they understood their votes might draw criticism but they want to bring more jobs to a beleaguered construction industry. The Nevada Senate voted 16-5 on Tuesday to pass a bill that would raise hotel taxes by up to 1.4 percentage points in the Las Vegas area to fund a convention center expansion and build a stadium -- partially funded by billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adeson -- that could house the Raiders. The measure garnered more votes than the two-thirds needed to approve a tax increase, and it now heads to the Assembly for consideration.I know Im going to have some folks cussing me out when I get home. But Im a big boy. I can take it, said Democratic Sen. Aaron Ford, who supported the deal, even though many liberal groups and three fellow Democrats opposed it. Notwithstanding what the pundits say, it aint the lobbyists here that persuaded me. Its the constituents whove told me time and time and time again that, I want a job.Lawmakers who voted no included Republicans Pete Goicoechea and Don Gustavson, and Democrats Tick Segerblom and Julia Ratti. Democrat Sen. Ruben Kihuen, a vocal critic, said he thinks stadium proponents are overpromising what the stadium will yield and believes the deal is a handout to a billionaire. That sets a bad precedent. That represents bad public policy and a misuse of taxpayer dollars, said Kihuen, who is running in a competitive congressional race. This magnitude of public money for a legacy project of one of the wealthiest people in the world is just plain unacceptable. The speeches came after a lengthy public comment period Tuesday morning that was dominated by stadium opponents. Critics decried the rushed deal, which is happening in a special session, rather than the four-mmonth-long regular session next spring.ddddddddddddhey also complained that the Legislature isnt using public funds to address mental health and education budget shortfalls, and they pointed out that some outside economists have panned the deal as a boondoggle that could leave taxpayers holding the bag in a downturn. But the three-hour public comment period appeared to ultimately help the stadiums cause. Laborers and veterans testified that they needed the estimated 25,000 construction jobs that the project will bring after the industry was devastated in the recession.Four lawmakers said in speeches they were influenced by the testimony of one man who described living out of his truck and taking showers at the gym before a construction job gave him a hand up.I couldnt leave this chamber and look a laborer in the eye and say I had a chance to give you a job and I voted no, said Ford, who said the mans testimony reminded him of the time when he became a single dad as a junior in college and depended on government help to get out of poverty. The 65,000-seat domed stadium is expected to bring 14,000 permanent jobs to the Las Vegas area. The total deal also sends $420 million for convention center improvements aimed at keeping Las Vegas convention industry competitive. The hotel bill for an average night at a Las Vegas Strip hotel would go up about $1.50 as a result.Two-thirds of each Republican-controlled chamber of the Legislature must approve any tax increase. Lawmakers are taking a break in observance of Yom Kippur and will resume on Thursday to discuss bills such as authorizing a sales tax increase to hire more police officers in the tourist corridor.NFL owners would still need to vote by a three-fourths majority to allow the Raiders to move from Oakland to Las Vegas.
